Long Run and Gardening

Hello!

Wow, three days of vacation flies by.  Saturday's weather was a cool fall day, Sunday it got a little nicer, and yesterday was sunny and spectacular.  The perfect day for my husband and I to plant 96 sunflowers!

We'll be happy if 10 of them make it big and tall.  Hoping animals do not eat them as well.  It's an experiment really.

We started all of the sunflowers by seeds, growing them inside our house using florescent lights (which totally amazed me that it actually worked), and then transferred the plants outdoors.  My husband rototilled a portion of our back yard and then we switched on and off digging holes, filling each with dirt, and then putting in the happy sunflowers.

My nails are not looking too nice today, but I suppose every piece of dirt that won't come out is a reminder of all the wonderful work we put in - and the sunflowers were just yesterday's project!

On Sunday we worked on our 20x20 plot that we purchased in our community.  Our neighbors let us know that there is a community garden down the street and we're giving it a try.  The plot was a big mess of weeds so hubby used that lovely rototiller for a longgg time, and then we raked, and then we planted broccoli, lettuce, red romaine, strawberries, kale, sage, cilantro, zucchini, cucumbers, spinach...

And basically 7 hours later...

Also, on Sunday morning I got in my long run (keeping with my training)!  I had no plans for how long I was going to run.  I told myself just get out there and see how you feel.  I honestly did not start to feel good until mile 6.  Isn't that crazy?  At mile 6 my body was like "ok, let's have some fun!"  I can't tell if I'm sore from the run or all the gardening - probably a lovely combination of the two.

Notice that I started much slower than I finished, but I think that really helped me.

So that was my 3-day weekend!  Long run and lots of gardening =)

I hope you had a wonderful weekend!

What's one thing you did?  Any gardening tips?

  1. I have like 4 square feet of sunlight in my yard, but I still try to grow a garden every year. Last year, I payed no attention to which plans were compatable with others and had an awful time with my garden. This year I spread it out (and planted some lettuces and broccoli in my front yard, don't tell my mom!) and I'm hoping for the best. I'm glad your long weekend was nice, hopefully this week flies by :)

  3. Sounds like a great weekend. I wish I had a garden. Add that to my when I live outside of NYC wishlist! I have no gardening tips for you. I tried to grow basil in my window twice and the result was not good both times :(

  4. Nice job on the garden-- I'm jealous of your space! I just planted cilantro, parsley and basil and I'm pretty sure I'll find a way to kill them haha. I want to be better at gardening but I don't seem to have the skill!

  5. I wish I had a place to grow a garden, but I live in an apartment. I might try to grow a few things in pots on my patio.

  6. Big ambitious garden, I hope you get lots of veggies and sunflowers! Will you harvest the seeds or enjoy watching the finches eat them?

  7. That's a huge garden for a experiment! I grew up with hippie parents and we grew and killed everything we ate. Now my only goal is to keep my artichoke alive! Good luck and enjoy the challenge!
