Rough Patch with Sleep

Hi there!

I'm currently enjoying an Amy's vegetable pizza topped with some daiya and vegan parm.  Simple lunch is where it's at.

Sage is currently taking a nap.  I'm trying the one arm out of the swaddle.  Last night was rough.  Baby boy was up every two hours.  I'm not sure what the deal is.  I didn't feed him at his 1 o'clock wake up and fortunately got him back to sleep until 3 o'clock.  I never know what to expect anymore with nighttime sleeping.  We really want to transfer him to the crib (he's in the rock n' play in our room right now) but it's proving a bit difficult.  He was sleeping better at three months old than he has been at four months.

We haven't done any sort of sleep training and I'm starting to think maybe we should.  I know it's not for everyone and from what I've heard from other mamas it sounds quite challenging, but I want Sage to learn to self soothe.  He needs to learn for his benefit and mine.

(Update added 12/4/14 - I put Sage to sleep swaddled in his crib at 8:30pm.  He woke up at 9:30pm and 10:30pm but did not eat.  At 10:30pm I switched him to the rock n' play, but in his bedroom with the white noise playing on the iPad and he slept until 5am!!! We shall see what tonight brings...)

Mamas:  Any advice?  Have you done sleep training?

Even after being up so much last night, the little man woke up so happy!  Makes me smile and laugh even in my sleep-deprived state...love love love...

In other news, our treadmill is being delivered tomorrow!!!  I can't wait.  It says it takes an hour and a half to setup, so hopefully that doesn't actually mean like 4 hours for someone who is bad at building things.

I want to start wrapping Christmas presents.  I stopped at the Dollar Store and wow did they have wrapping galore.  That is so the place to go!  This weekend we are decorating gingerbread houses with family.  Such a fun tradition that I definitely want to pass onto Sage.

Ok, Sage has been sleeping for 30 minutes with one arm out of the swaddle.  I consider that I big success.  Woohoo!

Sage and I had to run an errand to my husband's school this morning and of course he fell sound asleep in the car.  I took advantage and went through the drive-thru at Starbucks.  Grande soy steamer with a pump of peppermint.  It just screams holiday spirit.  However, I'll be needing something much more caffeinated when I'm back at work...all in good time.

Any sleep advice you have for a 4 month old, please share!

How's your week going?

  1. Hi, long time reader (and lover) of your blog :) Your little dude is so cute! My son loved sleeping in his rock n' play till he was 6 months old and we kept him swaddled too. When he was 6 months we transitioned to the crib and spent a few nights with both his arms unswaddled and the swaddle around his torso. Then we ditched the swaddle all together, no problem. So I say if he sleeps better swaddled, then stick with it for a month or two more. Also, keep him in the rock n play, but put it in his nursery, so he can grow comfortable to the room. Maybe try a fan or white noise machine, too. Try also putting him down in the crib/rock n play before he's totally asleep, very drowsy but just a little awake. This helps him learn to self soothe. This obviously works best when they are not super overtired. We also had to eventually do the CIO method when he was 9 months old and it really only took a few nights of mild crying, then he was sleeping like a champ. Not for everyone, I know, but I had very little help and needed the sleep. Hope some of this helps :)

    1. Hi Mary! Thank you SO MUCH! Your advice is hugely appreciated. Really the only reason I wanted to get away from the swaddle is because I worry about him rolling in the crib (I have not seen him roll yet though). I do not think he is ready to give up the swaddle yet though like you said. I just put him down for another nap in the crib swaddled and he's so peaceful. I think moving the rock n' play to the nursery is also a fantastic idea. Maybe eventually we'll try CIO method, I'm just not sure he's ready (or really me) for that. Thanks again! :)

    2. Oh, yeah, I was totally worried about the rolling over while swaddled thing! But it never happened while either of my kids were swaddled. I think as long as you ditch it by 6 months, you're golden. I would also recommend a great sleep book called 'healthy sleep habits, happy child' by Marc Weisbluth. Fantastic book that helps walk parents thru every sleep problem and how to fix it. Hope your little guy starts sleeping better soon :)

  2. You have hit the dreaded 4 month sleep regression. With my first he never slept well so it didn't matter what we did, but I think that is what is going on with your kid. I don't have much tips as our second is now only 2 months and is just a better sleeper overall, but they will grow out of it and if not they can cry out of it (we did sleep train like above but not until our first was 17 months... yep we did wait that long).

    1. Sleep regression...ahhh! It's so tough! I used to think Sage was a good sleeper, but now I'm not so sure. I'm glad your second is a better sleeper, that's great! How did the sleep training go at 17 months?

  3. easier than you would have thought. We did do a mini sleep train around 11 months as we were co-sleeping and I need a little freedom before his first wake up - that one was harder, but it was time and it only took two days. The first time we did the sleep lady shuffle which as in any method there will be crying was the least amount of crying, but when he was older we had to do the full extinction no checks. From what I've read about the 4 month sleep regression, they should make it out of it unless they have major object permanence you may not be so lucky. Fingers crossed for you sage sleeps better soon!
